The Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhode Island Independence members are united in honoring our revolutionary ancestors and serving our communities.  We are ages 24-99, engaged in furthering all aspects of NSDAR’s mission. If you live in Providence or the surrounding communities and believe that one of your ancestors may have served in the Revolutionary War, please email us. We can help you with your genealogy and membership application process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historic Preservation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 We helped clean up the Grace Church Cemetery in Providence where there are an estimated 256 veteran burials.
\u2022 We tour historic sites such as the Stephen Hopkins House and Hearthside House Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 We annually fund a scholarship for a student at the DAR sponsored Hillside School.
\u2022 We sponsor teachers for the DAR Helen Pouch Classroom Grant. The Helen Pouch Memorial Fund provides a $500.00 grant to classroom teachers to get supplies and materials for their classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patriotism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 We have supported women veterans with donations to the Holly Charette House which is a shelter for homeless women veterans.
\u2022 We sent greeting cards to veterans at the Providence VA Hospital.
\u2022 We clipped coupons for military families overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
