About Our Chapter

The Battle of Rhode Island Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), is a new, dynamic chapter serving the communities of Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton, and Little Compton. Our members are college students and retirees, women in careers, or raising families. Our personal hobbies range from gardening and fishing to surfing and following polo. Our chapter currently has over 40 members who descend from Patriots from seven colonies, Canada, and France.

We all share descent from a Patriot, and DAR recognizes not just the soldiers, but anyone who supported the fight for independence. Our Patriot may have provided supplies, cared for the sick, or suffered material losses by the British forces.

What We Do

We serve our communities through the three pillars of DAR - historic preservation, patriotism, and education. We write holiday cards for veterans, create signage for historic homes, clean gravestones, send care packages to active military, as well as create and present classroom programs on the Constitution and American Revolution. There are many more areas of opportunity for service through DAR and we look forward to expanding our activities.

The History of Our Communities

Our chapter is named after the Battle of Rhode Island, which occurred on August 29, 1778, when a smaller force of American militia held off the attacks of a larger British force. The fascinating history of this battle includes the first time the French Navy partnered with the American forces. Our chapter will honor and celebrate this battle and the patriots who fought by engaging and educating the public about the stories embedded in these towns.
